cd/dvd multi drive problems.

davolowe
my cd/dvd combo reads and burns blank cd roms and will play any pre recorded media. When empty, in my computer, drive is shown as DVD-RAM drive(D:) but if I put any blank dvd in it changes to CD DRIVE(D:) and shows icon of a DVD-R and will not read disk and shows "capacity 0Mbytes" + "free space 0Mbytes" I have tried various media to no avail and also a brand new combo drive only to get the above results. I am running Windows xp (which ive tried reinstalling) 1GB ddr ram with AMD athlon 3000+ 160GB sata hard drive. system works perfectly apart from above.

Yes I have the same problem. I have been all over searching for the cause. This seems to be a problem that no one has found out the cause. Does anyone know?

CD/DVD combo are usually CD reader/writer with DVD reader. Meaning you can only use it to burn CD-R, but can't burn DVD-R (or DVD+R). It should be able to read both.

    I have a Memorex DVD Double-Layer Recorder
16x16 Dual Format Internal drive. I had previously Roxio Creator 9 installed - Uninstalled - CLeaned all registry - Had nero 7 - Uninstalled - Cleaned the same - Unistalled drive and drivers reboot - replace drive - New flash firmware - I have been around the net and this problem seems like it is spreading. I had a card reader installed via usb - disconnected that. COuld there be an XP update that is starting this. My anti virus and security is Zone Alarm suite - scanned and updated. Motherboard settings are all correct. MY concern goes to the drive reading 0 kb but showing full. I can actually click on the drive and it opens up as though there are files on a cd. I should get nothing on drive insert media. Could this be a XP cd file write problem. I have used this to copy cd's?
    Thanks

I still haven't found and answer,
also, when I put in either cd or dvd, the dvd player acts like it's going to read the disk, and then is just kinda stops, but the disk is still moving, it seems, like it's stuck.
any suggestions would be extrememly helpful, because I've wasted way to much time on trying to figure this out.

    Dell Inspiron notebook and Roxio.
Roxio will see the disk as a DVD and burn data to it but Windows Explorer changes from "CD/DVD-RW(D:)" to "CD Drive(D:)" upon insertion of a blank DVD.

I've been meaning to get up there (to the computer in question) and just see what happens if you drag and drop files to it in Windows Explorer but the user is always really busy and it just isn't that critical since Roxio will actually burn DVDs. Still, it's annoying that an expensive new laptop has this flaw in it. I hope someone sees this and has an answer.

I have a Memorex dual layer DVD burner. I uninstalled Roxio howevr it still did this. This was even after I went into the registry and took all roxio info out. The memorex people had me load a new ATAPI driver in but this did not work either. I have an ASUS motherboard with Athlon xp processor. I checked thier support and had no answers. Any help would be appreciated.

My Sony DVD/CD drive also cannot read blank DVDs, and the drive shows up as CD, and cannot be accessed.

I had Roxio and uninstalled it a month ago.

I installed Nero and was able to burn a few DVDs with it.

I also installed ImageBurn and Accoustical CD Burner. Shortly after that the problem arose. I uninstalled Nero, and used the Nero Clean Up Tool, and also manually deleted some leftover Nero items.

I've been afraid to delete anything from the Registry, but I have done a good Norton cleanup of the Registry.

I'm going to work with my tech geek, and I'll let you know. Please do the same.

(For some reason I cannot Reply to "News Flash" in this thread.)

I tried the Adobe solution and deleted those registry items, and still have the same problem.

I suspect this is a DVD reader/recorder conflict, and would like to compare software and configuration with others who have this problem.

I previously uninstalled Roxio, and used the Roxio Zapper to fully uninstall it.

I also uninstalled Nero and Adobe Premiere to be safe as well.

I still have Accoustica CD Burner, and Image Burn (two fairly recent additions). I have had several other DVD or video readers from long ago, which I do not think are causing conflicts. Anybody else care to share?

Since Adobe has proposed a solution I wonder if one of their products is causing the problem. I have Adobe Reader, Professional, and Photoshop. Just recently, an old Adobe Pagemaker folder started opening on Startup. I haven't figured out why, and have no idea if this is relevant, but the timing is suspicious.

Just got off the phone with memorex regarding my DVD burner. They want me to send mine back. They say that it is a defective drive. Back in February they had me changing all sorts of drivers including Microsoft drivers. They were very nice in allowing me to send it back without a receipt. They do not want to troubleshoot saying it is positively a defective drive. Now I am wondering if all these problems are caused by a defective part within these different DVD burners possibly manufactured by the same company. Maybe they know something now and do not want to say. I'll keep you posted.

I'm having the same problem with two computers, one at work and one at home. Happened to both machines within a few weeks of each other. I've edited the registry as adobe suggests, and it didn't fix it. I've done a system restore, and that didn't solve the problem either. The OS is windows xp on both machines. The one at home is my own, the other one is a work computer.

My dvd player at home will still play dvds, though it says cd in my computer. The dvd burner will burn cds, but not dvds, and it too says cd in my computer. Oddly enough, after I encountered this issue at home, I was looking in 'my computer' at work and saw the same problem. So this tells me that it must be some type of windows update that has caused this error, as nothing else has been done to the work computer (at home, I'm almost certain that I haven't downloaded any new burning programs either, or any software at all, for that matter).

Has anyone come up with a solution to this rapidly spreading problem???

I have a Dell D800 Latitude W2k os. An external Plextor UF-712 burner and Roxio 6.0. The Plextor seems to function correctly with a CD or DVD that contains files. The CD / DVD label is correctly displayed. When I remove the disk and insert a blank disk, I cannot use the Drag to disk feature.

More importantly, I noted that the name of the disk (label) changes and changes to the name "FJD GumStick". That is the name of one of my 2 gig USB sticks. Also, the USB device is NOT attached to the laptop.

I am wondering if the problem is associated with "how I removed the USB devices"

i've seen so many solutions here, after reading all the threads, with none working, so i'm glad i didnt try one after another.

i'm presently in contact with ppl at POWERDVD and DVD X, berating them for their crummy beta versions! :o) - now i find out it aint their fault? oh well. their solutions were no better, btw. here's one:

With regards to error code: "no disc in drive", this problem is caused by one of the following:
    (1) DVD-ROM issue
    (2) DVD title issue
    (3) PowerDVD software issue

Please kindly try the following actions to verify the possible cause of the problem:

    (1) Make sure you're using a DVD-rom drive, instead of CD-rom drive for playback of DVD discs.

    (2) Use "Disc mode" to play a general commercial DVD title, and then try different discs to see whether the same error message occurs.

In addition, please open "Windows Explorer", check in the drive where the DVD disc was inserted, and see whether the files on the disc can be recognized correctly with valid formats, and also with a file size rather than "0".

    (3) If the same problem remains, please visit your DVD-ROM manufacturer's official website to update the firmware for your DVD-ROM model.

    (4) If the actions above did not succeed in resolving the problem, then please... uninstall/re-install the PowerDVD

    (5) Also, please uninstall all the burning programs on your PC first, before re-installing PowerDVD program to retry those steps above again.

    (6) To avoid any compatibility issues, please close all other software and utility applications including virus scans, screen saver and instant messaging software before you launch PowerDVD.

    (7) Try using other DVD titles using PowerDVD and Windows Media Player (separately).

    (8) Also try to play media files from the local hard disk drive using the PowerDVD software.

Please let us know the results (whether you are able to play those DVDs using Windows Media Player and also whether you are able to play movie files of the local hard disk drive using the PowerDVD software.)

duhh - musta been a senior moment

both my D and E drives turn out to only be CDROMS! when i clicked on properties of each drive, the general tab lists device type: DVD/CD-ROM drives - must mean one or t'other, not a combo.

shoulda googled the durn names first! just for those who dont know, DELL Dimensions come with Lite-On 486 - only CDROM
and the added YAMAHA CRW2200E - also CDROM

as my son would say: and don't we feel crunchy? sheesh

Please let us know the results (whether you are able to play those DVDs using Windows Media Player and also whether you are able to play movie files of the local hard disk drive using the PowerDVD software.)

duhh - musta been a senior moment

both my D and E drives turn out to only be CDROMS! when i clicked on properties of each drive, the general tab lists device type: DVD/CD-ROM drives - must mean one or t'other, not a combo.

shoulda googled the durn names first! just for those who dont know, DELL Dimensions come with Lite-On 486 - only CDROM
and the added YAMAHA CRW2200E - also CDROM

as my son would say: and don't we feel crunchy? sheesh
