Change ip range from class C to Class B

jeromemathew
Hi
Hope somebody can throw some light to the scenario described below.

Currently our single LAN network with a class C ip addressing scheme(Windows DHCP). Unfortunately the the maximum available ip addresses exhausted and we would like to updrade the IP range from the Class C to Class B. what could be the steps I should follow to acheive this.

Regards
Jerome

first off I would do this on the weekend or at a time when the whole network can be taken down.

Since DHCP provides clients with addresses and also provides clients with resource information, you have to change the servers and any other resource with a static address to the Class B you want to use. You have to change DNS records and purge DNS of all the old Class C addresses. Then change the DHCP scope for the Class B. flush DNS on clients. Then activate and authorize the Class B scope. renew all clients addresses.

Then basically find out if there are any problems with DNS, DHCP and client connectivity.
