Cloning laptop drive to a new drive problems

dell_4b
I have a Compaq Presario F572US laptop and it is only a month old. I always basically wipe the drive since I prefer smaller C partitions and they never come that was brand new. I was trying to clone the Hitachi 80gb laptop HDD to an external 3.5 HDD so I can then copy that back to the new laptop Seagate 160gb HDD. Using Maxblast 5 booting from the CD, I get 33% done and it freezes. When I use Diskwizard/sea tools, it doesn't start copying as it freezes well before the copy process.

I am able to see both drives. I noticed when I started copying the drive during the 33% phase before it locked up it was copying VERYYYYY slowly.

I did purchase a 2.5" SATA enclosure I should be receiving on Thursday (Nexstar) so maybe it will work better than the intermediate step I am trying now by copying contents to the 3.5" Nextar-3 I am using now. Any thoughts? thanks.

I downloaded the newest Diskwizard software from Seagate and ran the cloning procedure from within Windows not from the boot-up CD, and it worked. Hopefully this could help someone else going through this task.
