Close "Encounters" of the Windows Kind

Hi,
My os is win xp prof on a lenovo x41 thinkpad (2525 e2g). Of late, I've been plagued by a slew of error messages
and the most scary was the windows file protection one. It all began after I installed avast which started del-
eting files as though there was no tomorrow. Then I downloaded and installed Lenovo ThinkVantage
Toolbox which performed a systems check (How do link the log for you?). I had to uninstall it because of frequent
error messages. Another thing is that I can see win xp prof service pack 3 (automatic upgrade) in add and remove
prog but cant access it. I cannot even open internet exp. Not being a techie, I am at sea as to its resolution.
I am listing the error messages below.

(1) Windows Application Error: "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000022)..."

(2) "Aw, Snap!.. "
(Google Chrome, this I get a billion times if get it once!)

(3) "Disk space cleanup manager for windows has encountered a problem and needs to close..."
(But It worked in safe mode and I cleaned the disk.)

(4) "Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox has encountered a problem and needs to close..."
(I have uninstalled it)

(5) "Power Manager: An error occurred while loading resource DLL"
(courtesy Avast?)

(6) Run a DLL as an app has encountered a problem and needs to close..."


(7)Generic host process for win 32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close"

(8) "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.
Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware..."
(stopped after I removed the pen drive and ran chkdsk/f in safe mode... don't know whether its rectified)

(9) "Windows File Protection: Files that are required for windows to run properly have been replaced by unknown
versions; Windows needs to restore these files to function properly."
(This was after the chkdsk/f thing)

(10) "Microsoft help and support has encountered a problem and needs to close..."
(msinfo32)

Yesterday, I got a message that I didn't have the necessary plugins to chat but Java is installed but it doesn't
respond. I also got a message when trying to watch an online prog that flash some-thingummy had failed or collapsed.
Apart from this, files take a long time to open and why can't I access service pack 3 to install it?

    You have a number of issues. Not the least of which is that your hard drive may have a lot of virus and mal-ware infections.

    Step 1: Remove the hard drive and install it in a USB adapter.
    2: Connect the drive to another computer with up to date anti-virus software.
    3. Scan the drive for virus and mal-ware.
    4. Back up your files and settings. Make sure you get your mail files and know your account settings.
    5. I would get a new hard drive for the Thinkpad and copy the recovery partition from the old drive to the new drive.
    6. Boot from the recovery disk or recovery mode and restore the system to the original configuration.
    7. Install anti-virus (Avast works for most users).
    8. Install Windows updates and your software.
    9. Recover your data.

    Figure on most of a day to do all of that. As a bonus, your system will run much faster than it has for a long time.

    Hi Chas,
    Thanks for the suggestion but bro, remember, you are dealing with a beginner here and you lost me at step 4. If you could spare the time and give me a 'step-by-step for dummies', it'd be much appreciated. Could you do me this solid?

    Okay, Starting from step 4 with more detail:

    4. Back up your files and settings. Make sure you get your mail files and know your account settings.

    Once you have cleaned the old hard drive of any virus or mal-ware, you want to copy all of your personal files and account settings to a different hard drive. You could use the hard drive on the computer you use to scan the drive. I recommend using a USB hard drive like A Seagate GoFlex or a Western Digital Passport. (or any other similar drive of your choice)
    To make it easy, copy the contents of at least C:\Documents and Settings.
    As long as you always store files in the My Documents and My Pictures folders, that should back up all of your user files..
    Depending on the size of your hard drive and the size of the USB drive you get, you could back up the entire hard drive. Just create a folder like Old Drive on the USB drive. Then copy the entire drive to that folder.

    5. I would get a new hard drive for the Thinkpad and copy the recovery partition from the old drive to the new drive.

    The logic of a new drive is that should you not copy a file that is in a folder you did not back up, you can still recover the file.
    Copying the recovery partition requires some software. If you have a Western Digital or Seagate drive, you can download their branded version of Acronis True Image and use that software to clone your old drive or just a single partition.
    (Download and read the manual for more details on using Acronis.)

    6. Boot from the recovery disk or recovery mode and restore the system to the original configuration.

    Check the documentation for your model. You either have to perform an extra step at boot to enter recovery mode. Or, you need to boot from a special boot disk that starts the recovery process.
    CAUTION: Using the recovery process formats your C: drive and returns everything to the state it was in when you bought the computer.
    You will need to install the full set of Windows updates and install all of the software you use.

    7. Install anti-virus (Avast works for most users).

    I always download and install anti-virus software before connecting any new computer online. You can download the installer for Avast on a different computer and copy the installation file onto the laptop.

    8. Install Windows updates and your software.

    Run Windows / Microsoft update at least 3 times before starting to install software.
    I usually do not install hardware driver updates from Microsoft. I do take note of offered driver updates and I download the ones I need from the computer or hardware manufacture.

    Install your application software. (Office, Adobe Reader, and so on.)

    9. Recover your data.

    Start with the contents of the My Documents folders, copy the files from the storage hard drive onto the restored laptop.
    If you find you are missing files like email and account settings, rather than copy them from the Documents and settings folder, use the application to "Import" the files from the storage drive.
    Mail files should be somewhere in the Documents and Settings\ {user name} \ Application data or Local settings \ Application data folders. The exact location depends on the mail client software you use.

    If this is all too much for you, you could locate a reputable repair shop and have them perform the restore. If you buy the new hard drive from them, they often discount the restore fee.
