Cracking Linux password

rwtodd2007
I've recently taken over an IT support spot at a new company. The former person had created an inventory of all the hardware, etc and placed it on a machine running linux. Since they have left, they have not answered emails about the old passwords.

So I am trying to find a way to get the passwords for the OCSInventory program that runs on mysql under Linux. I haven't found many sites that can help crack linux passwords, but plenty for Windows.

Any help would be appreciated.

Your company could sue the former admin and/or withold his final paycheck until he coughs up the passwords.

We on TechRepublic will not show you, but saying that someone will give it a go.
Your best bet is to get coding and learn fast.
Here i have given you a clue, but i will not go any further. Good luck. :)

Please post back if you have any more problems or questions.

If you can boot off a rescue DVD, then you can unset the root password, then set your own one. There are plenty of instructions around for doing that.

If you are the mysql user, you can reset passwords without needing to know what the old one was. There are plenty of instructions around for doing that too.

Physical access to the box means that passwords aren't much of an issue.

BTW withholding final paychecks is illegal in many countries and can result in criminal charges. If you're really stuck, try offering the carrot of a day's consulting fees.
