End Process Tree - Good or Bad

joepayne
When a program is frozen, I use the end process tree to close all associated processes. I've been told this makes the system unstable for the future, even after a reboot. Is this harmful, or is it ok?

If the application happens to be in the process of writing to the hard drive and you pull the plug, then you may end up with a file system with inconsistencies in data structures.

I have had to terminate applications and processes out of necessity on many occasions without harmful effects, not that I'd notice everything but things have sort of worked out, unless it is a genuine hardware problem which caused the odd behaviour and freezing.

It is always good to try to identify the cause for the freezing, or work around it by re-installing or run checkdisk to make sure the hard drive is all right. Often it is worth wiping all the temporary files and restarting, or the other way round if one of the processes does not allow a file to be deleted.

One of the things you should also do is to check your system for viruses and spyware.

Be careful because there are a number of rogue anti-spyware applications around. spywarewarrior.com is a good site to check which applications are trustworthy and which are not to be trusted.
