I'm having a problem that, by all technical viewpoints, makes no sense what-so-ever.
Allow me to give as much detail as I can :
We have 24 locations, each one of these locations is connected via VPN to our main office, and every day they access a file to input their daily sales report (DSR) which is located on a shared drive, in a specific folder designated for each store.
Recently (3 weeks ago, on friday to be exact) we upgraded our servers to 2003 SP2, and all other available windows updates to date. When we did this, a few hours later 2 of our stores, and only 2, started experiencing a problem opening that DSR spreadsheet (excel)
It would give them the error that the file was read only, or the location the file is stored at is not responding. Logging in as administrator to the local machine, or the domain on the computers at the location gives the same result. We've replaced the computers at both locations twice, I've gone out with my laptop and I can access the file just fine from my laptop, logging in as them when placing my laptop before AND after the vpn device. If I go to a different store location, I can log in as any of the 2 stores in question, and open the file without issue. We've tried moving the files around, resetting permissions, and every trouble shooting step I can think to take seems to have already been taken. (Replace computer, verify the files integrity, verify the VPN clients integrity, verify permissions) Any ideas? It's absolutely baffling.
Additional troubleshooting steps taken since posting:
Set "Everyone" with full access and disabled inherit permissions, same issue. Moved to a new folder and pushed through inheritable permissions preset to that folder, same issue.
