Excel update links keeps freezing

flyingknees
This is weird but here goes. A user has a rather large Excel spreadsheet that used to update links from other spreadsheets in the same directory. Now for some reason, it freezes whenever he tries to update links. I can open it and so can others, yet he always seems to freeze up. I've tried removing and reinstalling and patching Excel 2003 but nothing. I'm literally stuck...any other suggestions as to why it freezes up like this?

My first intuition would be that he has lost contact with the directory, which I am assuming is on the network. Can he see them in windows explorer or Excel?
If so he has a Windows logon issue.
If not try running a repair on Office in Add/Remove programs Repair and restore shortcuts.

Yes as a matter of fact he has full control to the directory. He can open it and everything. He is able to see them in the windows explorer and excel. Do you still think I need to run an Office repair?

No it's Office 2003 with all updated patches and repair but the update links still freezes up and cannot comprehend why! It doesn't freeze for other people when they open the spreadsheet. It must be something else...
