While DaveDXB may be reffering you to one of several excellent utility disks that WILL resolve your problem. you should NEVER boot your P.C. from a disk you know nothing about.

DaveDXB, assuming your reply is valid, we should always discourage this type of action. People already download and install things much to readily. That is the root cause of most of the issues facing the average computer user today. They need to be encouraged to be more circumpect. If you are going to provid e the link at least provide a reference for what they are getting into, or end them to a site hosting the iso that also includes an explanation of what is invloved.

Anyone that would provide assistance on this site to hack into a system is not someone to be trusted.

On the other hand, it would be exactly what our wanna-be hacker deserves to get compromised while he is compromising someone else. That is called justice...

If this is really your job function, you must have, at some time or another required access to a machine that you did not have the password for. (for whatever reason).

If you have dealt with users for any period of time then you would also realise that setting and forgetting an administrator password is a common issue.

Setting an Administrator password is also probaly the first thing you would tell an average user to do to protect their computer. It has been recommended repeatedly here on techrepublic.

Providing nonsense or dangerous advise to someone YOU ASSUME IS A HACKER is not really helping anyone. It may be ammusing to the rest of us to think some script kiddie is going to wreck his machine doing something he should not be doing but you could be causing a lot of greif for someone who just doesn't know any better.

Is that answering password questions like this one will, over time, lead people to believe that they CAN get hacking information here.

See my response below. Calling MS or having a direct conversation with a peer is really a better way to get the needed information- although if one is an administrator, I would think that one would already know either a work around or a tool.

I agree- we should not be directing users to unknown software. For the very reasons- all excellent, by the way- you state.

Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

In these days were computers are stolen so frequently, as an Admin, it is my livelyhood to ASSUME that you are a hostile until YOU have shown yourself to be otherwise.

Your only "innocent until proven guilty" in a court of law. This isn't a court of law.

Bottom line, even if this poster WERE to be valid, posting an answer here in an open forum would also make it easily accessible to the people that are NOT valid. I will do NOTHING that is going to make any wannabe hackers day easier, and someone that is a thief with a stolen system is even worse.

Agree or disagree, it is the generally agreed upon method of handling the 20 password hacking pleas that come through a week. They just generate more. No one that values this site wants it to turn into a hacker site.

There is no universal password in MS.

Begin by calling your System Administrator. That person should be able to reset your password.

This is a site of IT professionals. As such, we believe that to assist in any hacking or cracking to be unethical. By community agreement, we do not choose to assist in this.

I know that you would like to honor the ethical standards of this community.
