hard drive fodlers disappearing

bldsm
My hard drive folders are continually disappearing. Everytime I log on I have less. I have tried everything - virus and spy scans, chkdsk and nothing works. What is causing this and how do I stop it.

Thanks
Desperate

I added another 1Gb of ram 2 weeks ago and haven't noticed this problem till now. I changed page filing to auto - but I can't find the missing folders and there is now more disk space than there was before

amd athlon 64 processor, 3000+ 2.0ghz, 1.5GB RAM. xp home. 1.2TB hdd space, 800GB free, on c drive should be 20% free however free space is growing daily as folders disappear.

If this is on a network, it could be a network policy of some sort that gets rid of folders. Do the same folders get tossed, and the same remain, or is it random folders that will disappear? Also, is it from only your desktop, or anywhere on the system?

you can try exchanging hdd's and loading the OS on the other hdd...run it for a while like this, it could be a faulty drive...see if it happens with the other dirve, if so, you have a deeper problem in the system than just a hdd or virus/spyware...if it doesn't happen on the new drive, it the is narrowed down to something with the old drive (spyware, virus, failing drive)....
