Host name vs. Domain name

I want to know what exactly is the difference between the host name and domain name?
What/How do they both differ? I have looked for info on internet and it's very very confusing. Please help.

    A system is called as a domain if there is a server operating system installed and active directory creation is completed. In a network all the systems are under the control of domain.it is just like a parent in a family.

    where as in host there is no active directory creation is not required. it provide services to other systems in a network. it is just like a friend
