How do I transfer programs and files from one H.D. to another. I have an old computer running xp with two HDs on it and I would like to transfer files and programs so that I can re-format one of the drives.

The simplest solution would be to copy entire C: partition, or hard drive.

Install "CasperXP", it's free.

Connect empty disk - it should be the same size or bigger then original (PATA, SATA doesn't matter) - do not use removable disk.

Follow the instructions, they should be self-explanatory. The safest option would be "copy entire disk"

After copying turn off computer, remove old disk, turn on, set bios to boot from new disk and... well... that's all. Everything will be the same, xcept for different disk size.

Hope this helped

If it is a Boot Drive that you want to reformat. You an use Clonzella which is free from here

http://clonezilla.org/download/sourceforge/

If it's a Slave Drive all that is required is to copy the files with something like Cut & Paste or Drag and Drop both of which are available in XP.

However you need to be aware that program Files have dependences on the Boot Drive and if you delete the Boot Drive those programs will not work till you reinstall them. Also if this has IDE/PATA Drives in it you should stick with that drive type particularly on the Boot Drives some older M'Boards require SATA Drivers to be loaded before you can install the OS to a SATA Type Drive.

you can only transfer data from 1 HDD to another not programs.

your need to reinstall all program again.

one option is available is that if you take a image of your hard disk with OS and Data and then you can restore back to same hard disk.

Many software are available for that like ghost, acronis etc...
