And you need to stick to it so you have both Direction and a way to measure how well you are going.

Every Business that fails in it's first few years can be related back to not having a Business Plan or not following it.

IT is a very large area which can not be covered by any single person so you need to stick to what you know and do best.

But to do that you need guidelines in place so for instance if you are supplying new hardware you need to get Deposits first for any new equipment but if you are supplying Code you can maybe afford to eat a few hours of your time to make a customer happy. You however can not afford to give away a couple of new computers to get the same result with a dissatisfied customer.

IT consulting is a very broad industry, so if you don't specialize, you'll be going up against a lot of competition. Specialization can also allow you to charge more, since there may be fewer consultants who can provide what you do, and so your niche service may be in higher demand.

I'd also question how detailed of a business plan you really need to get started. Unless you need external funding, you probably don't need a detailed business plan. Right now, what's most important is to determine your niche and how you'll get your first clients. Marketing channels are extremely important for any business. After you start generating some revenue, you can flesh out your plan a bit more.

Since you're going to be self-funded, concentrate on the minimum you need to get clients, deliver your service, and send out invoices. Bare bones.
