I think I might have a virus that causes my computer to freeze up

For some reason, whenever I turn on my Compaq laptop it freezes on the desktop screen. I can't even move the cursor. Is it a virus? It was working fine a couple days ago.

Whenever you are seeking a solution to a problem there is no such thing as too much information. A virus is just one possibility of too many others. You should always have some sort of virus protection and a firewall of some kind....StopSign.com , norton (symantic.com), zonealarm.com, are some good ones all are free except norton but they have an online scanner to use for free. For further help I would need to know at least some basics:
    how old is the machine?
    any new software/hardware recently installed?
what O.S. (operating system ) are you using?
    any noises heard?
is the unit plugged in an outlet or on batt?
    is the battery fully charged?
Has it had the crap slapped out of it?

although you can always do the first step and cuss at it...but it hardly ever fixes it but a lot of times it makes the owner feel better.

    Good Luck
