insert bootable media into appropriate drive, can anybody help me?

gediboy11
I have an old gateway 2000 pentiam processor. amibios 1992. I canot get it to boot onto windows, I have changed the battery, changed the settings around, with cd drive first, hard disk second, and flopy third, even tried to do just all hard disk, but no joy. I tried to put a windows 95 boot cd in, but would not recognise it. Just keeps saying insert bootable media into appropriate drive. I downloaded a boot version from active boot disk, that had both dos and windows on it. The DOS, was picked up ok, by my disk drive, but said windows failed, when tried that one. i do not know what else to do, can anybody help?

    Hello,

You may need the a Dos Boot disk with the correct CDrom driver loaded in the config.sys.
The Windows 95 boot disk comes with a generic ide driver, it does nto work for all cdroms.

if you can access the hard drive with the dos bootable disk , edit the c:\config.sys, see what driver is users (ie device=c:\windows\CDROM.sys) then copy the sys file to your bootable floppy disk and add the same line to that config.sys. (a:\config.sys)
After that check the MSCDEX line in the autoexec.bat and make sure the same line is in you a:\autoexec.bat of the bootable floppy

once you boot with those, you should get a drive letter assiged to the CDrom (ie E:) and you can type e:\setup at the command prompt .

    good luck!

The HDD may have issues which cause it to not boot other than corrupted boot files or boot sector. You can usually download the test from the drive maker. There are still tests that run from DOS on bootable floppies.

If the drive maker has been bought by another company, the test is usually still available at the new vendor's site.
