Internet Explorer hangs on opening

jny50
When I try to open internet explorer, the header part opens and it says "connecting" but the screen below the header stays white and it does not open/connect. Eventually it uses 100% cpu. I can get on the internet fine through my AOL and have cleaned out all temp files, from the internet controls, etc. For certain connections, I need to go through int explorer intead of AOL so I just noticed the problem this week. I have a cable modem and last wek was able to get on through int expl just fine. It looks like the int explorer may also have been upgraded recently. Virus scan and adware scan is negative. I have an HP printer and it had given me an error that it was not connected (although I can print) and when I restart the error has gone away. I read a bout a patch problem in March with Hew Pack products and windows. I have recently upgraded to a new version of itunes and adobe. But do not know what the problem is. Any thoughts?

I had the same problem: Iexplorer 7 hanged on startup with "connecting" showing in the tab. CPU pegged at 50% even though it was hung.

Through the add/remove programs I uninstalled something called "yahoo companion" and that fixed the issue immediately.

So I recommend uninstalling anything "iexplorer toolbar" related or installing anti-spyware software and running it to clear any potential spyware issues.

Hope this helps & goods luck

Brilliant deduction. And obvious - but only in retrospect.

I tried everything: Removing anti virus programs (I hate Norton). Scan for protected files sfc /scannow. Replacing Internet Explorer from another Win XP.

Thank you. And thank techrepublic for being on google (search verbs: internet explorer hangs).

I would not have thought of that. I was
looking at Registry edits and virus removal.

    Thanks once again.

I too started to experience a similar "IE7 hang on opening" problem. Also I remember seeing an HP printer error similar to what you had received. Interestingly, I had just recently downloaded firmware & latest patches for my HP printer (it's a new computer). I disabled the following two HP add-ons and my IE7 hang problems disappeared. The add-ons I disabled are:

    - HP Smart BHO Class
    - HP Smart Select

    Hope this helps someone.
