You can do this. I have used Zero Assumption Recovery to recover data from a drive that cannot be read by the system (shows up as RAW format and/or prompts the system to request you to format the drive cause it shows it as unformatted) and actually, I have to use it again on a drive my system shows as unformatted when I know it's not. There is a free version but the free version limits you to restoring 4 files at a time. If you have your data confined to folders that's even better. The software will scan your drive (doesn't take long) and will show you the files it has recovered. All you have to do is save the recovered data to another hard drive. btw, this software also recovers picture files too.
