Is there an easy way to repair SAM hive?

guero13
ThinkPad running XP Home Edition reboots endlessly >path to lsass.exe not found< The Repair Console won't work because SAM is corrupt, asking for a nonexistant password.
I now have the HDD running on another XP computer, no virus detected by Malwarebytes. Is there an application available other than the RegEditor to repair/replace the SAM hive? It looks like there are plenty of restore points available.

Sysinternals (now owned br micorosft , used to have a tool called ERD commander 2005R2 , it allowed you to do system restores fromthe erd bood cd. not sure its still doanloadable. but it used to work great, Another tool is UBCD4win, this one you download and build and has a bunch of similiar tools

Thanks a lot, I'll look for these tools. A SystemRestore is exactly what I was looking for.
But the hard drive died in the ThinkPad after I did a chkdsk on it & then copied some old registry hives into the config. It just disappeared. Had a lot of errors.

ERD Commander was/is one of the must-have tools so you can boot into the pc system and copy those system files from the repair folder to fix the corrupted files..

    Cheers :)
