If you didn't that may very well be your problem, the same applies to the USB Boot Device you need to set whatever you want to boot from to a higher Boot Device than the HDD inside the system. You also need to make sure that the correct amount of RAM and the correct Type of CPU is being shown as fitted in the BIOS as well as the correct time and date.
You also need to save any changes as you exit the BIOS so that the system doesn't revert to the wrong settings which prevented it from booting in the first place.
The other thing that can happen with all NoteBooks is that a failing/failed HDD can pull the necessary voltages way too low preventing the system from doing anything at all and when that happens you need to replace the failed HDD before you can proceed.
So when you tried a CD did you change the Boot Order in BIOS?
