Make sure that your laptop is set to automatically recieve I.P. and DNS addresses automatically. In control panel open network connections. Go to rightclick properties for your network connection and rightclick select properties for the TCP/IP connection. There should be a checkbox or radio button recieve IP automatically, or something to that effect. There should also be the like for recieving DNS addresses. Select both of these, restart, unless you have windows xp and see how it works.

If you where using something else like Windows 98 you would have to reboot the system to allow the new settings to take effect.

    Step 1 Open Control Panel

Step 2 Double Click on Network Connections

Step 3 Right click on your LAN Connector or WiFi Connector and chose Proprieties.

Step 4 Click on the TCP/IP listing and again chose Proprieties from the list below the box with the different Networking Protocols in it.

Step 5 Under the General Tab click the Radio Button telling the system to Obtain IP Address Automatically then do the same thing for the DNS Address it needs to be set to Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically.

Step 6 Click on OK and shut down that window and then unless you are using some device that allocates DHCP Address that is all you should need to do.

Step 7 If you have a router or something similar issuing DCHP Addresses on the Local Area Connection click on Install then Protocols then Add and chose something NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol. The beginning of this protocol may be different between Home, Media Centre and Pro but the ending is always the same then once you have highlighted the NetBIOS click on Add and it will be installed.

Then you should be right to go from there with XP you do not need to reboot.
