but after the drive got here and i got it in the machine i asked my boss if we had a volume licence copy of xp and he said no. then i asked how i was sopposed to restore the machine and he said we will have to find the resotre disks for THAT PARTICULAR MACHINE in a company that has 80 machines......short stoy we looked all day and couldnt find the disk. how can i restore that machine and stay leagal without the disks that came with it.

its a compaq nx7010 laptop

You don't work for a "really small company" - you work for a 'medium' sized company.

How did the old laptop drive "go bad" on you?

Since you "only recently came onboard", any problems with missing XP discs is no concern of yours. I would suggest attempting one of the other 79 XP discs first, as your Product Key may well work in the laptop.

Odd for any company not to have a volume license!

I would bet you can't buy that laptop without an OEM copy of XP with it.

You can use any disk for the same class of machine and then use the key on the compaq's sticker. Don't have the sticker? Then buy a new copy of XP, install, then load the proper drivers from the net.

The license is not the disk, its the license key. The disk is NOT unique, the key is. The key for a compaq is usually located on the back of a desktop or bottom of a laptop.

I also lost my install disk and just called up Dell and gave them my 'service code' that each machine has and when I gave it to them they sent me a new set of disks (one with drivers etc). and got them two days later. Don't know if Compac works the same way but just maybe...
