If you plan to have a port open in the firewall for someone to access files inside your network, it would be better to have a proper server for that purpose with login security and proper logging of connections. You might be able to install a Linux distribution like Ubuntu on your PC and get your friend to connect using Windows Secure Copy or WinSCP which uses SSH - Secure Shell. It is easier to set up than FTP. If you want to try Linux first without overwriting the PC operating system, download Ubuntu from http://ubuntu.com or order the free CD. The Ubuntu Live CD allows you to load it first in the memory and try the look and feel of it. You may then decide to install it.
