Netmeeting errors

lscouras
Hi,
I have Netmeeting and use it frequently at work both from home over a VPN and at the office. We use our own ils directory. I have - long ago - used it to connect to my father's machine and I remember we had some difficulty getting it to work. We have recently tried again to get it to work and are having difficulties. We both have DSL (mine is wireless). We both have routers. I run Sygate Agent firewall. I "think" that the problem lies in that we have a pre-assigned (but not static) IP address and somehow are not negotiating correctly through the routers. When either of us tries to initiate a call we get the message that the person we are trying to "call is not able to accept NM calls". I know that MS has done away with their ils directory and I get the impression that they want you to use Live Messenger instead of net meeting. That is all fine and dandy for talking, video and file share, but what about desktop sharing, whiteboard and desktop control? These are not supported (at least not that I can find) in IM. Here is the scenario we want to accomplish, so if anyone has input I'm all ears...
He has a desktop running XP, he wants to remotely control a Win98 system from his desktop. In the past we used Netmeeting to accomplish this but if there is an easier way I'd like to know. Can this be done simply with the netmeeting remote desktop sharing? Can he do it via email addresses rather than IP addresses? I am not sure how to get the real IP address if the routers are assigning a generic one such as 192.168.1.100. Help please :-)
Thanks
Leslie

I am not sure what is causing this issue or how to resolve it but a quick search on google yielded lots of results.

I can, if Im permitted by the rules of this forum, highly recommend a web application called logmein. It works through firewalls, VPNs, it will connect to PCs on local networks who share dynamic IPs (often changes) and uses 128 bit encryption of the information between the machines.

    Visit logmein.com
The application is free to try with all the features for a limited time and once that time is up you can continue to use it for just remote controlling or purchase it for all the additional features.
