Network ID Grayed out in Windows XP Professional

Hi Forum

From a few days, we have faced with a problem of Network ID Disabled / Grayed Out in Windows XP Professional over the network.

Also, windows services like DHCP Client, Server, Workstation, Computer Browser gets stopped automatically.

Henceforth we are not able to run any network setup, add or remove system from Workgroup/domain.

Furhter, if we restart this system, the Network ID is got enabled. Then
only, we can access all network and are able to work on it. But this also is very time confusing and it requires a 15-20 mins. again the network id will be grayed
out/ disabled & again there is no other option but to restart the system.

Hence due to which we are losing valuable time & resources..

To resolve this issue we had taken following actions -:
1. Reduced the network hop count to Router.
2. Reduced the heavy load of other network traffic to a single network, and connected all switches directly to the router.
3. Further, we assumed it might be through viral infection, so on 21st Nov 2009, we have updated all PCs to updated Antivirus and cleaned each PC through Antivirus.

4. Then, after 22nd Nov 2009, there were reductions in the same calls on the Network, But still we are facing this issue only a count 15-20 PCs out of 100 total count.

Please provide us your kind suggestion or any solution which is available with you for the same.

We are also working on the same to resolve it as soon as possible.

    I'd check the application and system logs on the computer and look for why those services are stopping. That's probably the root of your problem right there.

    I don't see how what you tried to fix it is even relevant to the problem.

    Thank you very much for your reply. For any PC from workgroup, Network ID button from system properties gets grayed out/disabled. Hence, the PC leaves all active network connection. Unable to access shared drives, unable to share network resources like printers, backup servers etc. Unless systems restarts, the problem will not be resolved, also during this time Server, Workstation, Computer Browser, DHCP Clients services gets disabled.
    If we restart the system then only it gets resolve, but further this problem will again regenerate after 15-20 minutes.

    If you would like to view log files as you specified in reply, i will forward you the same, please give me your email id then, i will forward the same in CSV format.

    Follow the steps below with the System started and restarted in Safe Mode with Networking. Running in Safe Mode loads a minimal set of drivers for the Operating System. You can use these options to start Windows so that you can modify the registry or load or remove drivers. If you can access the Internet use it to download and install the files.

    If you can't access the internet to update MBAM try the instructions below to clear a path to the internet to be able to run MBAM. You can also download the updates for MBAM and run them from the USB.

    From another System download and install Spybot, update it and copy the the installed folders to a USB Stick. Copy MBAM and the Update as well.

    With the new strains of Virus that have been created you may find it necessary to rename the executable files so that they will work. Rename mbam-setup.exe and then navigate to the install folder and rename mbam.exe. Do not change the files extension from .exe. Do the same with Spybot.

    Removing malware from System Restore points:

    When your infected with any trojans, spyware, malware, they could have been saved in System Restore and can re-infect you. It's best to remove them.

    XP
    Press the WinKey + r type sysdm.cpl and press Enter.
    Select the System Restore tab and check "Turn off System Restore".


    Vista
    Press the WinKey + r type sysdm.cpl and press Enter
    Select the System Protection tab. Untick the box next to Local Disk C: and any other drives and click on Turn System Restore off.


    After scanning the system and removing the offending malware, re-enable System Restore by repeating the steps, this time removing the check from "Turn off System Restore".
    When all is clear you may need to tidy up the Registry. Link is at the bottom.


    Once you have restarted the Infected System in Safe Mode, navigate to the USB stick and run Spybot.

    Download Spybot - Search & Destroy and install it. Update it. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

    When you first start Spybot, click on the Mode menu and select Advanced mode. Under the Tools options (bottom left) select View Report. On the screen in the right hand pane, select View report to create a new report. Save the report as it may come in handy later. Spybot will also keep log files in this location in Vista:

    C:\ProgramData\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Logs

    Spybot will also keep saved log files in this location in XP:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Logs


    Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, install it and update it.

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

    If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.

    I would keep scanning with it until it is clean by closing out and rebooting and running it again.
