Network Monitor

imrsh001
We have a network of about 42 machines, out of which 12 are on Live IP, now these machines are usually creating quite a lot of network traffic, which is adversely effecting our network resources, can there be a way (Tool)by which we can monitor what is happening on theses machines, i have used VNC etc but they do indicate to user that you are being watched.. need some urgent help.

You can analyze the traffic from any client on your network.

There is a company called EMCO Software, http://www.emco.is/

They have a bunch of nifty utilities that you can download trials for free and the cost of owning them is very reasonable.

One of those is a remote program. From using it in the past it does not notify the user that you are monitoring their PC.

By 'Live IP', do you mean these PCs have dynamic IP addresses? Dynamic IP address is usually assigned to a router or modem which connects your network to the internet. Inside your LAN dynamic addresses are assigned by a DHCP server function, which can reside in your router or a server.

Please note that Wireshark and other network monitoring tools assume that all the traffic on the network is available to the listening device. This means that you may have to use a hub through which all the traffic is channelled and which also has a connection to the PC running Wireshark.

One way of controlling the activities available to your users is to force them to go through a proxy server. You can buy firewall appliances like Watchguard Firefox, which run a hardened Linux distribution and have two or three network interfaces. A proxy server can be set up to allow traffic to certain websites and services, or to block traffic to a number of sites and services, depending on the policies your management wants to implement.

If you do not have a budget to purchase a firewall appliance, you can build your own and set all the browsers to use it as their proxy. If your users are Restricted or Limited Users in Windows, they cannot change the proxy setting. All you need is a PC with say 512MB RAM and 20GB+ hard drive and a Linux distribution like Fedora which comes with Squid - see http://www.squid-cache.org.

I have run Squid on RedHat 9 for 100+ users, limiting web access to work related sites for the secretarial staff and filtering out webmail and live chat sites for the professional staff, to improve productivity and prevent spyware infections.
