Okay, l'll play the game. What's happening to TR this morning???

sleepin'dawg
I open my computer do a few things like read and answer e-mails and then call up TR. Wonder of wonders, I'm already logged on but, wait for it, I can go everywhere except into forums. that will open only so far down as "Discussions" "Questions" etc. and then the page is blank until you come to the stuff one normally finds at the bottom of the page. What's happening now???

I used the Browse view and opened the off-topic list, but only saw 5 discussions. I was going to whine about it, but when I went to confirm the behavior, it displayed properly.

    Try it again later!

    BTW - glad you're back!

This seems to happen in fits and starts; happened to me last week too.

Had a blank page for about three hours, but all of a sudden it came back!

I've no idea what starts it, but since the revamp it's happened a couple of times for no apparent reason; I know the last I heard was that Doug was trying to trace the problem, but couldn't as it was so intermittent.

It'll probably be okey dokey for a few months now - it seems to happen like that!

.....it's related to your (and my) firewall. Something's trying to get through it, and since it can't, it doesn't do anything. In my case, some pages just weren't loading, regardless of how many times I tried. I temporarily turned off my firewall, and it loaded pretty fast. I'm not suggesting we disable our firewalls, but rather TR quit trying to get through them.

Figured that would catch your eye.
    :)

I've noticed that most site problems I get happen when i.i.com.com hangs in it's response for the requested data.
if it takes longer than 5 seconds there is either missing content as Dawg is commenting about, or a complete page can't be found error.

But I figured that all of the various .com.com servers are really different network "homes" on one single server so I never mentioned it.

But it is a chronic problem.

Based on performance I envision the TR network as one 8088 based computer running MS-DOS and Windows for Workgroups v3.11 with about a dozen IP addresses and using a 300 baud acoustic coupled modem to connect to the Internet. So that's what happened to my Epson XT!

Just FYI, the i.i.com.com machines aren't actually run by CNET. Those are Akamai servers. Akamai is in essence a bandwidth-assistance service. They maintain servers across the planet which (usually) makes content delivery faster.

For example, say you're in Taiwan. When your browser tries to download an image or CSS files from i.i.com.com, instead of having to go all the way to the US it can find those files in Akamai's Taiwanese data center.

That's the theory, and usually Akamai is a good service.

We're looking at the servers now. We have a pretty good idea as to the cause. It's intermittent and may take a while to roll out a resolution.

This looks like a load problem rather than some software bug.

I'm curious about a chronic log in problem I'm having lately. Each and every time I log into TR it denies me entry and does not recognize my password. I re-register the password and am then granted entry. I do not have this problem with bnet.com, zdnet.com or com.com (Download.com.com) but I am encountering this problem with techrepublic.com.com.

TR and the others are listed amongst my trusted sites and all have permission but TR keeps causing problems. 'Tis a puzzlement.

because they all authenticate the same way.

Is the error message from your browser or from the site? What is the error message?

    Dawg,

I'd recommend deleting your TR cookie and see if that makes a difference. Sounds like the TR cookie might be corrupted.

How it is that I am now in St Louis (see profile). I had my location listed as "3 Day Walker".

I would like to know if that change was made through my profile or was made accidentally. I have had a year of phreaks and l0sers and need to know if my pass has been compromised.

Really appreciate any help on this line. Incidentally, I use a strong pass and all the basic encryption.

You're right. I remember that you had listed "3 Day Walker"
On the otherhand if you change your profile you get a message confirming that you did change your profile. Very peculiar ?:| if you didn't.
Hope it will not cause you any trouble.

BTW how is your training for the 3-day walk going. are you back on the 30 miles a day or ...

I don't start "official" training until mid-March. Regardless, I have been doing 3 miles a day (or so- pedometers aren't accurate and the GPS likes to be outside) on my lunch hour at work. There is an extensive skyway system that I walk in.

This year will have some different challenges. I am working in the Cities and commuting by bus, training through the week will be more difficult, time will not be my friend. We'll see how I make out.

I never received a notice that my profile had changed, it just did. Since I have had so much trouble from the Spud, I am pretty sensitive to these things. I am itching to change my pass but don't want to change anything that might make this harder to track down.

    GRRR!

Thanks for asking, Rob. Nice to know that friends are watching!

I have not changed anything back to as it should be although I have viewed the information. I don't know why the system thinks that I have made a change.

Very strange. Let me know when I can change it back. I don't want to do anything that would hose your efforts to find out what happened.

Incidentally... you guys are all great. but you know that. Now if I could just convince you to "sympathy walk" with me... a fundraising idea if I have ever heard one!
