PCMCIA adapter for Desktop Computers

wpgoalie
I recently purchased a Verizon PC5740 aircard. It works well with my laptop and now I want to use it on my desktop. Does anyone know what kind of adapter I should use and where I can buy one?

    Dear Ludwig

For clarification, (apologies for the jargon!!) dashboard software is what we call the individual network's "branded" software which enables you to do things like manage your list of contacts, send SMS etc....Companies like T-Mobile, Vodafone usually offer software such as this with the card that you are given.

The E600 is compatible with our U132.

Whether all functions of your particular network's dashboard software work, you would need to speak to your local distributor to see what experience they have of this.

If you were interested in buying a P-series adapter to use with your desktop PC I would recommend contacting Saven Hitech who are our Swedish distributor and who offer P-Series and U-series adapters. Please see their contact details below:

It is possible that Saven Hitech will also be able to give you information on the use and compatibility of your "dashboard" software.

    I hope this helps!

    Thanks

Well, network's dashboard software? I am not familiar with that term.
Presently I use laptop with E600 Huawei which gives me data, voice (it has earpiece with microphone and is in fact a 3g phone) and SMS service.
Fitted within U132 would it still provide voice and SMS services as in P-series ?
Who sells P-series in Sweden ?

    Hi,

Rather than trying to adapt your pcmcia card to your desktop, why not buy an aircard to fit into a PCI slot in your desktop?

A true PCMCIA slot was, I repeat WAS, analogous to the PCI slot in your desktop computer. Recently, however, the wireless Internet establishment has persuaded the notebook manufactures that no one uses the PCMCIA card slot and they, Verizon at the lead of the pack, have pushed for the physical slot to be converted to an ?Express Slot? for wireless Internet cards. This is basically a USB device with more available power for the air cards. The farce here is that these new notebook computers with the ?PCMCIA Express Slots? will not accept your existing SCSI, memory cards, hard drives, data acquisition cards, and industrial control cards such as Allen-Bradley PCMK cards, etc. The Express Slots are not an expansion slot analogous to your PCI slot in your desktop computer; they are a means for wireless Internet without an appendage such as a USB memory stick.

Before you run out and buy an Express Card wireless Internet card modem determine what type of a ?Slot? is in your notebook computer, PCMCIA of Express Slot. Unless you do not wish to pay for two wireless Internet cards and intend to swap one of them between your desktop and your notebook, you would be better served to investigate a PCI wireless Internet card for your desktop and a Express Card slot wireless Internet card for your notebook if it has a ?Express Card Slot? and not a true ?PCMCIA SLOT?.

For those of us doing industrial control and data acquisition we are being left out in the cold. USB is not an alternative since it is half duplex and limited in baud rate. With the demise of the PCMCIA, parallel, and serial ports, a notebook computer will become a play toy and not a tool.
