+ 0 Votes VOIP w2ktechman 7 years ago basically is using your LAN lines to make phone calls. Some benefits are that long distance calls are cheaper. Drawbacks are that if your LAN goes down, so does your phone system. Power-outs, same thing, all communication stops. Some companies have both in place, with instructions to use long distance (when available) through the VOIP instead, and have setups on the computer for dialing/receiving and the external phone for local/LAN problems (usually just managers).
