postfix/sasl failing on Debian; "saslauthd server: Permission denied"

Neon Samurai
I've been at this for a few days and can't figure out what I'm missing though I'm sure it's something obvious.

Regardless of what configuration changes I make:

"SASL authentication failure: cannot connect to saslauthd server: Permission denied"

Even the venerable Jimmy's Howto ( http://www.jimmy.co.at/weblog/?p=52 ) followed line by line leaves my mail dysfunctional.

Too add to the frustration, I've setup postfix/sasl/ipopd many times now with no issue using other distributions but Debian is just not playing nicely.

Any ideas too what I'm missing?
(the howto and every other postfix/sasl one I could find says I have it setup the same way they all did for Sarge and Etch)

Any idea what the correct chmod for /var/spool/postfix/var/run/saslauthd/ and contained files should be?
(mine shows 700 on directory and files though I've tried 770 and "chgrp sasl /var/spool/postfix/var/run/saslauthd" with user postfix belonging too group sasl.

Is there a different preferred way to get smtps/prostfix/pops setup on Debian 4r5?

Mail processing works.
Mail pops receipt to client works.
Mail smtps receipt from client remains broken.

I can provide more detailed information as requested.

It's to the point now where I'm going to do a reinstall on the testing server without "umask 077" in the build scripts just to see if that ate something it shouldn't have.

I built a clean mail only test box and smtp with tls worked perfectly. I can only suspect that a file permission issue caused the problem.

For anyone else receiving the same error. I recommend the howtoforge posting "the perfect server - debian etch" postfix/sasl configuration sections on page 5 combined with the Jimmy howto url previously given for the final adjustment. Do the configuration first then restart saslauthd and postfix after so everything goes into place correctly.
