Red "Snow" on LCD laptop screen

jrsocrates
I have a Compaq Presario 2100. A couple weeks ago, I noticed a weird phenomenon. I get red "snow" (like on a fuzzy TV channel) on my screen in places where there should be black. For example, when the computer first turns on, there used to be a black screen with the Compaq logo. Now there's a *red* screen. And on my windows desktop, the parts of my background that ought to be black are red. It's not a huge deal, since this is an aging machine and I mostly use it for word processing, but I was wondering what is causing this and if there was anything I could do to fix it?

These lead a hard life and if they are regularly moved around you can slightly bend the entire chassis which causes the M'Board to become slightly bent. As this continues to occur with different trips you eventually get breakages in the solder joints on the components to the M'Board and the unit will stop working.

If you where just getting a different colour being displayed on a random scale the most likely culprit would have been the Monitor connection to the M'Board but snow is the M'Board telling you that it's beginning to go away.

Black pixels are red, and grey pixels are aqua. An external monitor works fine. Did you find a fix? Thank you.

I'm having the exact same problem w/ my Presario 2100. I have heard alittle sth. about it night being relative to a failing backlight. Have you learned anything more on it?

I am having the same problem, I see that many people have had the same problem. I googled this, and I have found many forums on this problem.

My black turns grey, my blue turns purple... What can I do to fix this?

The video on the motherboard may be going but before you replace it, adjust the brightness until the red turns black. On my older machine I adjusted the brightness from 0 to +8 and the color has been fine now for quite a while.
