are among the most virus, trojan, worm infested zones in Cyberville. It's hardly selfish for a network administrator to block sites and networks that cause the company trouble.

It is also the network admins responsibility to keep illegal internet activity out of his/her domain/network. A lot of what is done via Limewire is illegal.

P2P activities also consume bandwidth which is somewhat precious and already heavily allocated on company networks. Every personal bit of whatever that your wife downlads via a dirty P2P network not only risks bringing viruses, worms, and trojans into the network (thus risking taking it down), it consumes bandwidth.

The network admin is doing his/her job - which is to control usage, illegal activity and keep the network running smoothly.
    [among other things]

Your wife - and apparently you - are the selfish ones.

The number of work related uses for limewire can be counted on teh thumbs of one hand, the number of potential busienss threats = the number of users you see on it at anyone point.

Selfish, yeah, the admin want's to keep their job and not and up in a cell with someone called Bubba who real pleased to see him.

    Sheesh.

PS there can be legitimate use of P2P, what is the business case for accepting the risk though? If you use it you knoe the sort of files available for sharing.

First of all, you don't know that the IT is using P2P. For all you know the downloads he is doing might be work related. Anyway you are twice removed from him, so you have no place judging what he does or does not. Nor does your wife, for that matter.
Second, you are no IT yourself or you would know whether you could avoid the block, how to avoid id and then wouldn not even think of doing it. Twice removed in case you are not posing just to draw sympathy for "your wife".
How come it's you and not your wife doing the inquiry? Do you have any other post here? Like asking for a list of pirate-sites to download software?

You have got to be joking - You claim IT status and you think it is unfair? This is the biggest piece of illiterate drivel I have ever read in this forum. Do you think its fair for an employer to pay someone, such as your wife, to download illegal and questionable content, and to ultimately crash the whole system? Would you pay an employee to do that to your system? She should be terminated with possible charges, pending an investigation. Don't call yourself an IT Consultant, you insult the rest of us.

If you or your wife have proof the systems administrator is using P2P software to download porn then your wife should go directly to her boss and file a formal complaint.

Catching him on video downloading / watching porn while on the job should suffice...

HOWEVER, You, as an IT consultant should be aware that there is simply NO EXCUSE for using P2P in the workplace. You should not even encourage your wife to use it at work since it is a security risk and if she manages to bring down the company network (c/o infected downloads) by "accident", then she should be ready to be held responsible for her irresponsiblity.

If your wife's job function has nothing to do with the downloading of songs, she is in the wrong. If her job function DOES require this, she should be using other resources to accomplish the task- instead of a known problematic site.

If the technology professional on site does not comply with known policy, he should be out on his tail. If, however, he IS complying, he should be praised for doing so.

It's not just executables that harbor little nasties that can bring down a network.

And if the whole team is using it, no wonder the IT guy is blocking access. Good grief, does anyone there do any real work?

File sharing programs like Limewire connects
Your computer to a very large number of other peoples computers

This means if you download a file with a virus in it your computer can be infected
you may then pass that virus on to other computers

Virus can steal your passwords and other info or stop your computer working correctly
Even erase everything on your computer
You need to have a up to date virus killer
But even this may not save you if you are one of the first people to get a new virus
so the more computers you connect with the higher the risk

Limewire and other file sharing programs
Need to connect to internet servers
    Useing address and port numbers
These are blocked by most firewalls
It may not be the IT but an upgrade or new
    software
The computer that the IT is useing may not be fire walled (not safe)

I hope this helps you under stand that
to use limewire makes you a high risk
Which is not good for the company
Because you put them at high risk
The loss of the companys computers
    Because of a virus
Is nothing compared to a few songs that you got from some other computer

Try something like bittorrent, as it has somewhat fewer viruses anyway, and may not be blocked. Also, the admin is doing his job, and chances are, if you can't prove that he's using P2P software, then he isn't.

Not only should you take a security class but perhaps you should learn how to write.

Scary that you use a computer and you can't even spell. Maybe if they fired your wife, she would get the point that you put an entire company at risk just so you can steal music and software.

Most companies pay thier employees to work and their IT staff to keep the employees working. Restricting activities which can impede the user's job at work is one thing but impeding them from damaging the entire company is another. Most people who post on this site are IT pros who do not condone hacking or bypassing security measures especially within the companies which pay our salaries. You may want to try posting on a hacking website.

In my case this question turned out not to be so foolish.I can definitely use the information generated by this query.
My son can't understand why whatever computer he is using, begins to have trouble after a while. I have told him that it's because of Limewire and have tried to explain what it is doing to the system, but he refuses to believe me, stating that his friends never have a problem. I'm going to print out all the pertinent threads here, and show him that "mommy" does know what she is talking about. Thanks!

1: P2P is generally illegal. Whether you or I feel so or not, it is. That IT guy is playing a game of "CYA", and in THIS particular case, winning - for now... Administrators have to do it all the time. From RIAA to MPAA to HIPAA to Sorbanes-Oxley... Federal laws, state laws, local laws... you name it, it is HIS responsibility to make sure everything is on the up and up.

2: Your wife is there to work. This is what she is getting paid for, not to share files. PERIOD. Tell her to get back to work, if the boss finds out she is doing what she is doing, she won't be asked to come back some day.

3: IF the IT guy is indeed downloading on his own computer (which I doubt, as if the Limewire port is blocked for one, it's blocked for everybody) that's HIS job, and if he loses it, it's HIS problem. If he loses it because of your WIFE'S downloading, that's also his problem, but it's somebody ELSE'S fault. He's just preventing the loss of HIS position, AFAIAC. I don't blame him one BIT for blocking it... I'd do the same thing, AND put some sort of software on that particular computer so she can't bring anything in from home as well. Who knows what she'd be dragging in, if she uses Limewire at home as well... Deep Freeze comes to mind. She wouldn't be able to do anything but WORK while she was there from 8 to 5. Even if she copied MP3's from a hard drive, CD, or thumb drive, they'd be GONE with the next reboot. And I wouldn't care ONE IOTA.

4: Where did you go to school, and did you pay ANY attention in English class at all? Your grammar, spelling, and punctuation are atrocious. I know that's not what you came here to hear, but I tell it like it is. I was hardly able to make it through your post. It's truly amazing how much more people are willing to help if you put a little effort into your post.

Lots of folks don't like the company policy. The words, "tough sh*t" come springing to mind.

You obviously are blissfully? ignorant about such stuff as browser hijackers, spyware, network worms, adware, keystroke logging, root kits, and oh yes viruses. Guess what - they don't give you a choice about installing themselves!

At this point I would like reach through your internet connection, rip your arm off and
beat you with it. People like you and your wife are responsible for not only wreaking havoc with an employers network, you also slow down the whole internet with crap.

It's not just executables that harbor little nasties that can bring down a network.

And if the whole team is using it, no wonder the IT guy is blocking access. Good grief, does anyone there do any real work?

The whole damn team with the exception of the responsible IT guy would be history if this was my company.

Your wife is a security vulnerability. Your an IT consultant? I suggest you take a security class.

    Cheers

I'd suggest a remedial English class instead.

Not only should you take a security class but perhaps you should learn how to write.

I understand your frustration, though, that if something is being blocked for some users, it should be for all users including the IT people. But then again, your posts are less than clear about what exactly your wife does and what exactly are the IT people doing.
