Server Operating System

Software is not my forte. I'd appreciate some insight. If I just want a file server, do I have to buy CAL licenses for Windows 2003 server?

How many users are you supporting? If it's a simple file server why not Linux?

Even though its a file server you need to purchase cal's for Windows 2003, if you are a certified partner, microsoft offers some limited CAL's (25) for its partners.

Or as suggested you can use Samba Server on Linux for you file server operations.

Bottom Line: Its not worth to spend so much for a file server.

Thanks guys. I agree about the expense for a simple file server, although the software vendor I'm working with specifies the minimum requirement of having at least a 2.6 ghz machine with W2000 or W2003. There will be only two workstations in this case.
