Trouble with Internet

wm.r.schultz
This morning I downloaded an update for RealPlayer. After it was complete I could no longer access the internet.
I cannot log into any web pages. I get a
"The connection was reset" message.

Computer says internet is connected. Network Magic shows computer is connected and internet connection is working OK.

I suspect the Realplayer download changed a setting?

Computer is a Sony Vaio desktop running XP. Router is a D-Link WBR-2310. Computer is hardwired to router.

I cannot access any web pages.

Would appreciate help.

Type 'cmd' into the run dialog box and type 'ping www.google.com'.

If you can, then it means you have external access, if not then you will need to interrogate your router/modem settings.

uninstall the update? Also, System Restore (depending on what version of XP you're running) can be used to return your system to its pre-update state.

like firewalls. Sometimes, they update and then decide the entire internet is far too dangerous for you to play in.

Also, power off your router for 60 seconds, then boot it back up.

More, if nothing else has helped:
    From a command prompt,
    nslookup google.com.
    and
    nslookup google.com

Paste the output in this thread. Only paste one if the output is exactly the same for both. (One has a trailing dot, the other doesn't. For a reason.)

But they are most likely right.

Particularly in another, more specific, forum. But sometimes here as well.

"Do you still have the box your computer was packed in?"

Have don a system restore. Everyhing looks OK except for the nti-virus and security program I have been using (Bell Internet Security)

I noticed that all RealPlayer files and some Bell Security fikes have been renamed.

I was able to ping google.

    Thanks toall who replied.

Odd that file names would have changed.

Post back if anything goes wrong. (But I hope not. :) )
