Although this is an old posting. I notice it has gone unanswered. Shame, really.

If you are still in fact looking for a thesis topic, or care to take up the discussion for a balanced view, try this:

"IT and it's changing role in Business, or How in the world DID businesses function before PC's, LANs, etc.?"

The content would then be to review as many different magazines, case-studies, case-histories, white papers, arguments, et. al. for the role IT plays within Modern industry; how it developed. Then reverse-engineer the discussion to see how we EVER survived without it?

A quick read through TR (and other IT related periodicals, online or in print), would ALMOST convince one that we've been doing this since man first stood on two legs.

I've read OS, Application, Open Source vs Proprietary "opinions", etc., and it would certainly provide a compelling study in the evolution of IT. Especially when the industries spawned from the first 4004 chip are taken into consideration.

Follow with PC's, the application of the Internet from a knowledge-exchange to the abandonment by the NSF to commercial use, the general role of IT as we're progressed, and attitudes currently held in Industry.

If you can figure out how we went from then until now, and call for an discourse as to how IT should proceed forward into the business future (after all, the genie is out of the bottle, and no amount of wishing can put it back), as a cost-center, profit-center, general "red-headed stepchild"....

If you DON'T get your degree, I'd be VERY surprised.

On second thought, maybe I'll take a crack at it.
