To make sure that it has not failed?

DVD Drives have 2 different Color LED's to generate the Laser Beams that read the Different Disc's. One reads DVDs and the other reads Cd's so it's possible for one Disc Type to work and the other not work

If a Disc is left in the Drive when it is not required the LED that Generates the Laser Beams for that Disc Type will loose Intensity and eventually fall below the threshold of being able to read that Disc Type. Before this happens it drive will stop burning that Disc Type.

If you need any Disc in any Optical Drive for extended length of time you should load a Virtual Disc program and run the Disc Virtually. It gives faster access to the Data and consumes less power when on battery.

The way to test the Drive is to insert a Boot Disc of the type required and try to boot off the Disc. If the NB can not read the 7 Install Disc for instance you have a Hardware Issue not a Software problem.
