1. Use the Windows XP CD-ROM to restart the computer.
2. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to repair the Windows XP installation.
3. Press R to repair the Windows XP installation by using the Recovery Console.
4. Type the number that corresponds to the Windows installation that you want to repair, and then press ENTER. For example, type 1, and then press ENTER.
5. Type the Administrator password, and then press ENTER.
When you get into the Recovery Console you will be at:

C:\Windows

At the command prompt type these commands:

chkdsk c:/r and press Enter

fixmbr and press Enter

fixboot and press Enter

bootcfg /rebuild

If that doesn't sort it try this.

Type the following commands, pressing ENTER after you type each one, where drive is the drive letter that you typed in step 4 of "Method 2: Use the Recovery Console," of this article:
copy drive:\i386\ntldr c:\

copy drive:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\
If you are prompted to overwrite the file, type y, and then press ENTER.

NOTE: In these commands, there is a space between the ntldr and c:\, and between ntdetect.com and c:\.

When you get into the Recovery Console you will be at:

C:\Windows

We need to change to the C:\> prompt

Type CD .. and press Enter

Type ren boot.ini boot.old and press Enter

Type bootcfg /rebuild and press Enter

Let it scan

Total Identified Windows Installs: 1

[1] C:\Windows
Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All)

Press Y and then press Enter

You receive a message that is similar to the following message:
Enter Load Identifier
This is the name of the operating system.

Type XP Access and press Enter

You receive a message that is similar to the following:
Enter OS Load options
When you receive this message

Type /fastdetect and press Enter

Type eXit to exit the Recovery Console

Restart the System and you will be presented with a choice of Operating Systems. Select XP Access.

If that doesn't work

You can use the Hard Drive Makers Testing Utility to Test the Drive which can be downloaded from below.

Download either of these Programs.

PCLinuxOS

Use your Knoppix CD or PCLinuxOS to boot from to retrieve your Data.

If the data is valuable you should try this but it's expensive.

is one I have seen a number of times and it refers to your computer being unable to find a driver for your storage device
You will probably need to load the driver from a floppy disk when you try to repair windows
