Windows XP Registry - Big Problem

RG Bargy
My machine will not run the Registry using Windows XP and will not allow me to run things like chkdsk from the command prompt.
Looks like a major problem.
I can log on, the wallpaper appears and then nothing...
So, can I connect the machine to another machine to copy or back up the hard disk on the problem machine? I have been told that it's better to remove the HDD and connect it separately. Any comments or thoughts on that?

Yes, it sounds like the PC has either been infected with a virus and/or the EXE file type has been associated with another program thus stopping programs from being able to run.

To restore EXE association try this fix:

    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

and select the EXE File Association fix.

Fitting it to a USB Caddy and accessing it from there.

Even if you manage to clean up the problem you will find some things no longer work and it is faster to reload than repair. So after you backup the DATA you can wipe and reload on the original machine.
