Wireless router not accessing the internet

nickpy
Hi all,

Just purchased a TP-Link (WR642G) wireless router to use with a Westell 6100 dsl modem (which I think also acts as a router).

I can connect with a direct connection to the modem but whenever I try to use the wireless router, I can't connect. Both my laptop and desktop can connect to the wireless router, but they cannot access the internet.

Everything is factory default. I'm on a dynamic IP that are automatically assigned. I can ping the modem, I can ping the router, but cannot ping outside websites.

Here's my ipconfig data with modem:

IP address: 192.168.1.45
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.1.1

Here's my ipconfig data when the modem is connected to the wireless router and laptop is accessing with wireless adapter:

IP address: 192.168.1.101
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.1.1

My ISP tech support only goes as far as powercycling the devices and having everything get detected automatically. But its simply not working. I've read somewhere that the wireless router could be trying to act like a "router" instead of a simple access point. There's obviously a configuration problem somewhere but I can't seem to get it to work.

I'm at my wits end. Any ideas?
