I ran into the same problem, and after reading all of the posts, MS bulletin, and suggestions for third party freeware, I have a much simpler solution.

Put Vista disc in drive, reboot. Run the Repair option, then select startup. That fixes Vista. Next, boot to Vista Windows, insert XP CD, explore CD, copy NTDETECT & NTLDR to the root directory of the HD that XP is installed on. Works like a champ!
