XP: Window size and position- how to restore/reset?

viper7419
Probably a simple answer to this but mind's gone blank.....

Many windows (application and tools) when used on her XP profile disappear off the screen when launched. E.G, launch printer status from command bar and it zooms off to the left of the screen and disappears, icon is on the widow bar and has to be maximised to view. Make any change and it disappears again. Some tool windows open with only the title bar visible and we need to select the edge and drag to resize (starts next time with only title bar).

Any suggestions, I thought there used to be a key combination to reset app windows? The 'cascade windows', 'tile windows...' donot appear to work when the suspect windows are open........

Sounds like a corrupt profile. Windows stores the last windows size and position of most applications. Usually the symptom you describe only appears for one particular program. Movingthe windows backto the visible desktop and closing the window will usually resolve the issue.

Note also, you have to log out the user before windows commits the new information to the users profile. Windows writes the information to the users profile when they log out. If the machine locks up for some other reason, your original window position issue will still be there next log on.

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile in Windows XP.

A fster fix is just make a copy of the profile folders to retain data files favorites etc. and just delete the original folder. Have the user log back on. Windows will create a new user profile directory structure and your window postion issue will most likley be resolved. If not, you can copy the saved profile back and start over.

If you manually reset it, when not in the full window mode, then I believe that should apply across the board for every window opened in that application from then on, until you resize it again. At least, that's the way my Windows XP SP2 box works with Firefox.
