Add Vista-like search capabilities to Windows XP

Great, more crapola from MS to clutter up your desktop and take away more screen space.

I've always disabled indexing on our work computers because it's a resource hog.

Now, with WDS, it takes resource hogging to a new level--I'd go so far as to name it resource gluttony. WDS will literally make a modern computer running XP Pro 3x slower just by virtue of its being loaded on the system; which gets even worse when it's actively doing something. When Windows Update rammed this POS down our throats, I got a TON of calls of people complaining about slow systems.

Did I also mention that even after indexing, it would not return accurate results?

Sure, it works great in Vista, but on a non-Vista box, it's a great way to make your computer worthless for anything other than 'me time' as the commercial puts it. It's possible updates may have fixed it since it was initally forced on us...but time is money, and there's no compelling reason to waste time on a relatively useless 'feature' anyway since search functions already exist in WinXP.

I've previously viewed desktop search tools with some disdain, thinking them tools for users who don't know or can't be bothered to properly organize their files. I also have had some unease about downloading many of the popular free tools available from Google, Yahoo, etc. because I'm concerned I'll be getting more than just a search tool (TANSTAAFL). I universally disable XP's default indexing tool on systems I deploy at work, and have done the same at the house. I've long regarded it as an unnecessary waste of CPU.

Maybe I'm just ignorant about the value of these tools. At work I regularly search for files by name, but never by content. At home I occasionally search through a few hundred vacation .JPGs and another couple of hundred NASCAR photos.

In either environment, would I benefit from a desktop search tool as a replacement for the built-in Windows Search utility? What exactly do desktop search tools do that Windows Search doesn't? Would indexing benefit me? Is there a difference between the default indexing and the one in WDS, or does the WDS just provide more control over the default indexing?
