If memory serves me (and these days it's not one of my better attributes), the hard disks on the IBM PS2 series were before the IDE interface took over from ATA and were ESDI which was developed by Maxtor and ended up being another of IBM's semi-proprietary offerings which ended up going the way of the Micro-Channel bus.

I've still got a couple model 50's (with 486 upgrade kits) and and a 55-sx in my junk closet. Not sure why, but if you ever need to read an old ESDI drive....

I was into a bunch of those as we transitioned from AT and XT to the PS2 variety. Same problem, though with Compaq -- all proprietary and a single (expensive) source for parts.

I wonder how much energy gets wasted because of that. I consider wall-warts a mortal enemy.
