If that square goes black, the vaccine is no good. The nonprofit organization PATH developed vaccine vial monitors, heat-sensitive markers that let doctors know if vaccines have gone bad. Right now in many parts of the world, vaccines have to be tossed if the power goes off. This system enables them to keep the ones that don't go bad.
