I have been to the tower twice. The first time was some time in the '70s. At that time the elevators only went half way up or down, but met adjacent to each other at the midpoint. When they met they stopped and the doors that faced each other opened. Those ascending from the lower level stepped out onto a walkway that took them around so that they could enter the other car whose riders just stepped from the front of their car into the rear of ours.
It was fascinating to be able to walk around the "outside" of the tower. This way neither car traveled the whole way, just half way.
My second time was in 1990. This time was with my wife. I did not tell her what was going to happen. What a disappointment when I discovered that the system had been modernized and both cars made the whole trip and the catwalk was no longer needed.
On that first trip I asked how the elevators were powered as it predated electric power. The answer was that they were steam driven.
