Wow, that takes me back to my mid teens except I was using 3.1. To think back then I used to wonder how things would improve. I do remember wishing that the graphics on my dads 386 dx 25 were not up to my Amiga though!
Hello John, As you have been able to install win 3.11 I wonder if you ever encountered the following error. Fault outside of MS-DOS Extender. EC=0000 CS=02EF IP=983E AX=AA14 BX=0000 CX=5E00 DX=005A SI=0007 DI=CEE0 BP=0912 DS=02E7 ES=02DF SS=027F SP=01F4 This error shows itself during the installation of W3.11 while loading the second disk (yes I am still in the possesion of the original disks). I run virtual PC on several WINXP boxes and the error shows on all of them. The same happens when I try to install Win 3.1. Any ideas? Thanks Evert
Just for giggles? One would think an MS host would do a good job of supporting an MS OS, but it may be worth a try.
Links to the drivers and software mentioned in the Photo Gallery above can be found in the Classics Rock Blog: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/classic-tech/?p=157
Hmmm... I never had that problem with Windows For Workgroups or Windows 3.1 under Virtual PC. Both of them installed with no problems. Maybe it has something to do with the version of DOS you're using in the virtual machine that you're using to install Windows on. I've used both PC-DOS 6.1 and MS-DOS 6.0.
No I did not. I already had VPC installed on my test machine with a WFW 3.11 virtual machine configured, so I just went from there. We've got a copy of VMWare somewhere, so it might be worth trying. I'm not sure off the top of my head what their choices are for emulated hardware, but it's gotta be better than what Microsoft is using. Microsoft bought VPC, it didn't develop it from scratch, so it's not too surprising that it doesn't support all MS OSes that well.
Never mind VMWare - I run Windows 3.11 on DOSBox with no problems. I'd like to hear if somenoe has had success with VirtualBox too...
John, the sites you chose (specifically for the sound driver) are there but there's no link to download the driver. VPC 2007 is very picky about the sound driver and I can't seem to get it working. Can you help me with the correct sound driver?
Why would one want to do this? I've not used Windows 3.1 since the Millenium was supposed to have ended the world as we knew it. I certainly cannot use it mow because I've just thrown the discs away (all 24 of them). I'm moving house. It's amazing the things that one accummulates during fifteen years in one place, but that's another irrelevant story.
DOSBox emulates the following hardware via a config file: Sound: Soundblaster (Pro/16), Adlib, Gravis Ultrasound, Tandy, Disney Sound, General MIDI, Roland and PC Speaker. Graphics: S3 Bearing in mind that DOSBox was designed with gaming in mind, real-mode and EMM386 memory modes are supported. The application emulates a (almost) complete DOS system, so most of your hardware worries are baseless in this respect. Be sure to check out the CVS build for even better graphics support (I have a patched version that supports SVGA in several graphics card modes, such as my personal favourite - the venerable Tseng ET4000).
