The rainbows and unicorns must have escaped before a picture could be taken. I know Jobs personally kisses the unicorns, sprinkles them with fairy dust, and puts them in each iProduct that's sold. If you look at photo 26, though, you'll see the connector used to load the iPad with peace, love, and good feelings.

This looks like a device from a company that are well practised in design and build for mobile devices. Solid, miniature, clever use of space - and that's before you turn it on.

So, I'm in "hack this" mode already (at least in my head!). Can the NAND chips be easily removed and upgraded? If I bought a 16GB, could I just remove the 2 8GB's and slot in 2x 32GB's. I wonder if they are a push-fit or soldered? Given the portability of the iPad, probably have to be soldered in place. So Bill might be happy with damaged gaskets and broken clips, but I'm sure most won't. I wonder how long until these parts are available OEM? Lastly - I wonder how much the 3G circuit that will fit in that "spare" connector will cost? Below $130 and there's a cheap way to get yourself 3G. I wonder if it will be PCI Express like the laptop 3G cards? Perhaps that way you could unlock it from your carrier and use anyone (with suitable jailbreak and unlock hacks of course). I know nobody probably knows the answers to these questions yet, but it's fun to speculate isn't it? The other obvious questions is when is v4 of the OS shipping to the iPad, like it is to the iPhone? Perhaps that will cure problems like "no multitasking". Then it really does become attractive....

Got a kick out of using butter knifes and a spatula to take it apart very techinical stuff.Hopefully once you got it back together again it worked.

Was there a real reason for doing this? Or, was it just for craps* and giggles?

I would like to see how they produce the metal case. Do they use the "terracing to locate components?

Hopefully there will (not) be a "China version" coming soon in Asia region , half or even quarter the price, with built in analog TV tuner, FM Radio, dual camera , can make and receive call, send and receive SMS, with EDGE network support....

Nice job on the tear down. I'm sure I'd break a clip if I tried it. What's in the iPad to provide location service. There are various GPS Apps for it, also it's very aware of it's orientation for auto rotate and a very nice star chart. I don't believe it contains a GPS Receiver. How's it work? By the way, the new OS upgrade with multitasking has been released.

whenever there's something totally stupidly simple wrong with my device, and I don't feel like mailing it in to fix. Come on Apple, put a panel for HDD access so it doesn't have to take me all day to fix your out-of-warranty customers' laptops.

In the video of this tear down and rebuild, Bill states why he did it. Watch the video, it has some good information.

I always try to disassemble the devices we crack open in a way that will let me reassemble them in working order. I am glad to report I was successful in do so with the iPad. Check out the video that goes along with this gallery: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/itdojo/?p=1648

I knew you'd get nailed by the legions of Apple cult members (I mean customers)! "And the One Jobs did decend from on high with the most coveted tablet, and the legions of faithfull did fall upon their knees and sing praises..." All you hippies are so funny!

You mean it's just a machine and not a wonderful, mystical box that will grant me happiness, long life and prosperity as promised by the media hype? Bobo sad now.

They may as well desecrate as many of these computer icons as they can, because sooner or later big business will pass some new laws (no sense pretending politicians do anything more than sign off on them) that make it a federal crime to crack open any product you bought with the intent of seeing what's in it.

According to Terrence Corcoran of the Financial Post, in China, but by a Taiwanese company... They go on to say that Apple will clear about $200 a unit.

To my knowledge, I believe they use Foxconn Technology Group as their place of manufacturing. There has been some controversial information regarding this place - especially the way employees are treated. I'm sure you can a few documentaries and articles about the place..... personally just one of the reasons I steer clear from Apple.
