Geek Gifts 2009: Powermat wireless charger

Box front

Powermat USA's much anticipated Powermat wireless charging station has arrived in stores just in time for the holidays. Capable of charging up to three electronic devices at a time (plus one via USB power port), the Powermat promises to free up electrical outlets and rid you of cord jumbles.

The box front promises easy, wireless charging.

I looked at the Powermat in a friends store but the he said they were coming back defective as often as they went out the door. he said he wouldn't be ordering more until they get them sorted out. I got something SIMILAR instead, but I actually think it's a lot better and far more convenient, even though it's just a power bar system that you can plug ANY charger into. Mine will charge all my devices and is built into the top of a small valet that sits on my dresser. It's cool, my car keys, pocket change, tie clips etc. are all in one place and now all my devices charge on it too. It was not high end, $24.99 at 50% off, CrappyTire stuff but it works excellent! http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/7/Electronics/AudioEquipment/iPodAccessories/PRD~0374456P/Executive%2BCharging%2BValet.jsp There are actually lots of different Powermats around, they've been around a while now, some even daisy-chain together to charge as many devices as you need.

Seems like a good example of "Be not the first by whom the new is tried." I'm sure some of the proprietary issues raised in the review will be corrected eventually. By then maybe the price will have dropped a bit.

I gave my husband the valet charger last year, and it's still working great. The powerstrip is hidden, so it isn't too cumbersome. From what I read on the Powermat, I will wait. At first I was ready to buy it the minute I saw it, but from the posts, I will wait. Thanks for the heads-up.

powermats are not new, this new, soft design is just being marketed as such. this particular one supposedly has a lot of faults though, as I noted in my post below, a friend of mine owns an electroncs retailer and he said as many as he sells, he accepts returns on. He won't order them again until problems are solved.

Personally i allready went out and bought it and i dont feel like i am the "first by whom the new is tried", the product is allready a high quallity ,cutting edge technology and it has already became my favorite gadget. as someone who uses it frequently ( every day) i can honestly declare that apart from which the obvious benefits ,its also saves alot of money on power that all of the old chargers used to waste - its stops charging the moment the battery is full.

I thought it was pretyt cool too, though it is really pushed as an i-gadget charger up here it seems. I'm actually really glad i got the valet instead, it's handy for a lot more than just charging, and yes it works excellent especially for half price at only $30.00! At first, I was a bit bummed I didn't get the neato Powermat I had set out for, but now I am really glad I didn't get it and went with the valet.

Most charges stop charging when teh device is charged ,ad these days such chargers are so power efficient it hardly makes a difference. Glad to hear you got one that worked! I went to get one and was told they had as many returns as sales so I passed on it.
