i'm pretty sure the LEGO company allows people to order custom made pieces now, via the internet. i seem to recall reading an article in Wired about it a while back. i think it's really rejuvenated the company because it allows people to build pretty much anything they want, if they're willing to spend the money on the custom pieces.

Looking at some of these pics I was wondering if these were all done using standard store bought lego's that were not modified in any way? For example I can't figure out what type of pieces they used to make the gateway arch.
