Executive Summary

Freelance World is a Scotland-based accountancy service provider and has 1500 clients ranging from IT contractors to oil and gas industry workers - all self-employed people who provide services to third-party organizations. Freelance World uses IT systems to manage invoicing, accounting, and customer relationship management processes, but a consistently unreliable custom-built IT system slowed them down. McGill's priority was to focus on protecting and supporting clients. A mission-critical, highly available solution - with excellent security due to the sensitive business and personal data held - was essential. Freelance World chose to install Windows Server 2008 Datacenter with Hyper-V on the recommendation of virtualization specialist and Microsoft Gold Certified Partner Indigo Technologies. The environment was carefully designed to ensure future deployments could be rolled out seamlessly as well as generate immediate benefits to users. Windows Server 2008 Datacenter comprises of unlimited virtualization rights; saving Freelance World extensive licensing costs that would not have been included had it chosen to deploy a competitor's technology. Freelance World runs 20 virtual servers within its infrastructure, including Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 to control the environment. The company feels there is today far less downtime because the company can move a server on to another physical box. This means they can close down physical servers without the users realizing anything because they don't experience any service disruption.
