Executive Summary

The University of Hamburg is one of the largest third-level institutes. The PHYSnet data centre at the University of Hamburg faced the task of meeting increasing performance demands of the clients and cluster systems. The solution had to be one that would both endure in the future and also be as cost-efficient as possible. They chose IBM to overcome these challenges. The solution is based on the IBM RackSwitch switches, in addition to the switches, are connected by means of a redundant 10-GbE link based on fibre and also on direct copper cables to two IBM 48/64-port, 10-GbE switches. By converting to the 10-GbE technology, it was possible to massively increase the overall system performance and establish a platform that will last long into the future.
